I got into my past, and pretty much gave a Cliff's Notes account of that part of my life... Well, later that evening, when I was alone with one of the girls, she pointed out that in the entire time she'd known me (~16 months), she was completely unaware of that part of my personality. (The asshole, the cute romantic, what have you..)
What's this got to do with anything?
Well, in searching for "the career that is right for me." I've been taking various personality tests. Most of them based off of the Myers-Briggs test. Which basically says there are 16 core types of people (I/E, N/S, T/F, J/P), and blah blah blah. So, I had taken it 3 times, and I had got 3 different assessments. No help.
I had an appointment with a Career Counselor today, very nice woman I work with by the name of Nancy. She basically gave a simple Myers-Briggs test to me, and we went off of my answers, which were pretty much middle of the road. She suggested I was one of two (very similar) types. Our meeting ended, and she suggested I read up, and figure out which I think I am.
Nancy suggested I was either an INFJ or an ENFJ (she was leaning toward INFJ).
Direct from the paperwork:
"INFJ- Succeed by perseverance, originality, and desire to do whatever is needed or wanted. Put their best efforts into their work. Quietly forceful, conscientious, concerned for others. Respected for their firm principles. Likely to be honroed and followed for their clear visions as to how best to serve the common good."
"ENFJ- Responsive and responsible. Feel real concern for what others think or want, and try to handle things with due regard for the other's feelings. Can present a proposal or lead a group discussion with ease and tact. Sociable, popular, sympathetic. Responsive to praise and criticism. Like to facilitate others and enable people to achieve their potential."
I read through all 16 types (including the two Nancy suggested), and came to the conclusion I was an ENFJ (look up a little). I call Nancy over, and let her know thats what I think I am, based on what the book described it to be. I based my assessment on "How Others May See Them" (ENFJs).
"How Others May See [ENFJs]:
ENFJs are energetic, enthusiastic, and very aware of others. Their genuine interest can usually draw out and involve even the most reserved person. They listen to and support others, but also have very definite values and opinions on their own which they will express clearly. ENFJs are energized by people and are socially adept; however, they also have a strong need for authentic intimate relationships. They bring great enthusiasm and intensity to creating and maintaining these. - ENFJs like their lives to be organized and will work to bring closure to ambiguous relationships or situations. However, if people's needs conflict with schedules and rules, they will put people first. Others usually see ENFJs as: sociable, personable, congenial, and gracious - expressive, responsive, and persuasive." -- Most of that is me... the way I think my friends would see me.
To which Nancy responded, "Well, don't forget, sometimes we put on faces for others." And I'm like, shit. That's no help. I'm just a bunch of different faces. Later on, Ann (another Career Counselor with whom I work) came by, and noticed what I was reading about, and she suggested, based on what she knew of me, that I was an ISTJ.
Direct from the paperwork:
"ISTJ- Serious, quiet, earn success by concentration and thoroughness. Practical, orderly, matter-of-fact, logical, realistic, and dependable. See to it that everything is well organized. Take responsibility. Make up their own minds as to what should be accomplished and work toward it steadily, regardless of protests or distractions." -- That is me, to a "T" ... when I'm at work (on most days). Anywhere else, that's pure poppycock.
Of course, I basically told Ann that, and she asked me to look at the one that is it's complete opposite; ENTJ.
Direct from the paperwork:
"ENTJ- Frank, decisive, leaders in activities. Develop and implement comprehensive systems to solve ogranizational problems. Good in anything that requires reasoning and intelligent talk, such as public speaking. Are usually well informed and enjoy adding to their fund of knowledge." -- If the situation calls for it, I become Mister Get-The-Job-Done. I will take charge to accomplish the goals set, if it isn't getting done.
...Although my EN{F}J is in the back of my mind saying... "Dude, you're gonna hurt someone's feelings."
So, after all this quoting and what not, "What the fuck is your point?" You are asking yourself... if you're still reading this.
My point is..well, more of a question than anything else.
-Do I have "multiple personalities"? - You know what I mean.
-Does anyone else feel like they do too?
-Am I simply nuts?
-Do you feel as though you wear a different "face" depending on your setting?
