Tomatoes

Two of them.

For the first time ever, I was in a car that got pulled over. Terribly exciting, I wasn't driving. I was in the passenger seat, holding onto two tomatoes - one in each hand. We were driving down Baseline, when we saw the cop sitting on the side of the road. We checked our speed, 35... that's the speed limit. Cool beans! We pass him, and bam his lights are flashing, and we pull over. The three of us sit in the car wondering what we'd been stopped for, also wondering where the cop was, it felt like we'd been sitting there forever. Finally, the blinding and flashing lights are obstructed by a shadow, and the officer of the law approaches. He asks how long we've been driving with our headlights off. To which we try to explain, somewhat relievedly, roughly 3 blocks. He lets us off with a warning, and asks to see Arwyn's (yes, like LotR) license to make sure everything's in order. He walks back to his car, and we start laughing.

Here, in this car, you have a normal girl, dressed normally sitting properly behind the steering wheel - driving, everything is.. well, normal. On the passenger side, you have a six foot guy (very big compared to the driver), holding two tomatoes, one in each hand. And in the back seat, you have a girl sitting quietly next to a large suitcase, in her pajamas. Pajama-girl (Mari) told a story of how she'd been pulled over on her way to a Water Quality Conference because the car had been seen performing conspicuous activities at the campus parking lot - What is that anyway, was the car assaulting fellow cars, or simply performing lascivious acts on them?!

The officer comes back, and gives Arwyn her license and a business card, wishing us a safe and good evening. Very well aware of her situation, sitting in a right-turn only lane, blocked off by a double white line, Arwyn signals to turn right, and pulls forward. A man was in the middle of the crosswalk that connected with ours through an island, and Arwyn stopped for him... mind you he wasn't in our crosswalk yet - but she stopped anyway, and waited for him to cross in front of us. We kept on driving, we got to campus, and while on campus, where the speed limit is 25, Arwyn never broke 16 - not once. It was hilarious, but neither Mari or I said anything, we were passengers, and she was doing Mari and I a large favor.

Now to explain. Arwyn, Mari and I had been hanging out at Mari's apartment for the better part of five hours. At 12:35a.m. Arwyn left to go home, and Mari and I were going to take Mari's truck to take me home. As it would happen, Welch's (Mari's truck) was dead, the battery was completely drained. We called Arwyn, and she headed back over. Unfortunately, Mari had a flight this morning and needed to catch a 5:30a.m. bus to the airport. And.. the bus picks up somewhere she needed her truck to get. I devised a solution! She would spend the night in my room, and get to the bus without her truck, since Arwyn is gonna have to take me home anyway, we'll just bring Mari along. Mari quickly packs her things, and Arwyn comes back - we do some kitchen clean-up, because no one is going to be in the apartment for the next 3 days. Mari finishes her packing, and we head out for my place.

Where do those pesky tomatoes fit into all of this? We had tacos for dinner (artery-clogging goodness), but we had more tomatoes than we needed. I don't eat them, and between the two of them, they only had 5 or 6 tacos. Mari, leaving town early this morning, had no use for the extra two she had. Since I don't eat them, and Arwyn does, Arwyn was the chosen one to care for them. She had originally forgot them when she left the first time; the second time, I just held them for her. And, when we were pulled over, I had two shiny red tomatoes, one in each hand. - Something I don't think I'll ever forget about the first time I was in a car that was pulled over.

And yes, Mari caught her bus.
