Labor day (Monday) the FX Channel had a marathon of the show, "24" starring Keifer Sutherland. It started at midnight eastern, and ran all day, until midnight eastern the next day. Being in the mountain time zone, it started at 10pm for me. I was channel surfing around 10:20 when I came across it, and recognized Keifer Sutherland's character and stopped to see more precisely what I was watching. I figured out that it was an episode of "24" and it seemed to be the first one of the second season based on the circumstances. Over the next 40 minutes, there were no commercials. None. It was presented without commercial interruption by somebody who wants me to buy their product. What this translated into, was me watching the show for 40 minutes straight.
At the end of the hour, that is 11pm, I was like, holy crap what happens next? When will the next episode be? And, as it turns out, the next episode was then, and it was announced that it was a 24 hour marathon, of the show "24." I was like, well, I've been up since 3:30pm, I can go for a while. And besides, I don't think there are actually 24, hour-long episodes. This is Season Two, it'll probably end in like 11 episodes, and Season Three will start, or it'll loop to Season One, or maybe they'll show Season Two again. Little did I know. They really meant, 24 hours of "24," one full season, all in one sitting.
Seven hours later, six am, to be precise, I was still watching, sitting on the edge of my seat, wondering what I had gotten into. I fell asleep for twenty minutes. Woke up, figured out what I had missed, and continued to watch. Eight hours later, two pm, I ordered pizza (Domino's, Medium One-Topping, Half Pepperoni, Half Sausage), it arrived thirty minutes later, during the show, I went out and got it, came back in, ate and watched, watched and ate. It was good.
Six hours later, 8:00pm, I was counting down the end of the marathon, looking forward to sleep. It was so good. I couldn't stop watching til the end. I had been laughed at by friends, but this was something bigger than them, or me. It was the marathon of "24," and I was going to finish it if it killed me.
Two hours later, 10pm. I had done it. I had sat through 24 hours of "24." And it was worth it. I was thoroughly entertained, and my emotions had been on a rollercoaster. I laughed (a decent amount), I cried (more than none, which is a lot), I grinned, I grimaced, I cringed, I smiled, I cheered with the good guys, I sneered at the bad. I was in it for the long haul, and I sat through it all.
All I have to say at this point is, there is no way in hell I'm watching Season Three, one episode per week. All or none baby! And if this time next year there is a Season Three Marathon of "24," I'm so watching it. But there is no way I can watch that show one episode at a time, for weeks on end. No way!
The entertainment was worth the time, but I still feel like I wasted my weekend in front of the tv. And I was up for damn near 31 hours. I slept like a brick.
