A Week of Culture

So to speak.

Monday, I had the dirty pleasure of seeing a movie entitled "Alferd Packer: The Musical" which, is a movie from the creators of South Park before they did basically anything. Trey Parker wrote, directed and acted in this hilarious movie. With music as memorable as "Kyle's Mom's a Bitch" and "Drugs are Bad M'Kay" - You'll be singing about "Schpidoinkle Days" and "Let's Build a Snowman." At one point, I was crying from laughing so hard - if you appreciate South Park's humor, and get the chance to see this flick, go! You won't regret it.

Tuesday, I got my tomato on. I'm taking a Salsa Dancing class at the rec. It's a lot of fun, and a not too shabby way to meet cute girls while learning a skill that one day may be useful. In any event, I look forward to it every week, it's a ton of fun.

Yesterday afteroon, in my Film Studies class, we were subjected to a movie entitled "The Russian Ark." A movie that is most noted for it's cuts, or lack thereof. The movie is one 90-minute long take that wanders through the Hermitage museum in St. Petersburg, Russia. Unfortunately, the novelty of the continuous shot wore off within 20 minutes, and I was out like a like for a good quarter of the movie. I appreciate the cinematography, I didn't mind the subtitles, but it just didn't make for a very good movie. I had done a little research on the movie on IMDB.com prior to going to class, and it did feel almost like an infomercial for the Hermitage as one person had posted. I got to see some cool art and sculpture, and if ever I go to Russia, I will try and visit - I guess it worked in that respect, but as a movie, dreadfully boring. At one point, I took a look around the room, and most people looked on the verge of sleep, or out cold. C'est la vie.

Last night, Spike Lee was on campus. Unfortunately, the tickets sold out in three days flat, and I didn't even know about the event until after they'd been sold out so I figured I was s.o.l. but the fates intervened. My friend/coworker Dani (female) happened to be on the Cultural Events Board - the people who got Mr. Lee to come, and she had an extra ticket. Needless to say, she was most generous and hooked me up. And when I say hooked me up, she hooked me up. Can you say Opera Box?! That's right, I could see the whole stage with no one obstructing my view, there were 6 other people in my entire section, and if I wanted, I could've hocked a loogie over the side onto the peons down below. Freakin' awesome seats!! - Previously, the only way I knew Spike Lee was from the heartbreak he wore on his face when Reggie Miller would take over against his Knicks and slowly knock them out of the playoffs. But, last night I got to see the man. He was funny, and had intelligent things to say. I've never seen any of his movies, but I plan to now.

He spoke about NCAA eligibility expressing the view that the kids bringing in the money via sports should get to at least receive some of it - something I don't disagree with. He joked about being near Eagle, Colorado - when he recounted ordering room service earlier in the day (it's two hours away). He spoke briefly on affirmative action, and his movie making. Spike told us to find what we loved and make it work for us - a recurring theme from guest speakers, something I like to hear. And a few other things came up when the Q&A session took place. I was very glad I went, and as soon as I got back, I sent Dani an email thanking her numerous times for hookin' me up.

March 29th, Desmond Tutu is coming to campus, and depending on the price of tickets, I will either be seeing him, or The Hebrew Hammer, either way, it'll be a culturally enlightening evening.

Cool beans.
