Marketing Research Debacle
Honestly, don't waste your time reading it. It's just me venting about school bureaucracy bullshit, and not worth the time. Continue on at your own risk.
-------------------------------
First, some information you may find useful. It is a requirement in my class that to acquire two percentage points, you must participate in two different Marketing Research experiments through the Business School. In this semester of summer school, prior to the morning of August 7th, there has been one experiment available. Oh, by the way, the final is the morning of August 8th (the last day of class).
The following is e-mail correspondence between what I assume is the liaison between the B-School Marketing Research people and the student body, her name is Gina.
Quoting Gina, August 5th, 10:49am: (General E-Mail to the whole class)
Here is the information that everybody is waiting for. This afternoon we will be posting a second experiment that will be available on both Wed. and Thurs. of this week. After this experiment is posted, and you are unable to participate you can choose to do the paper option. If you want to get a head start on it you can start by choosing a study from an academic journal from the business library. The basic idea is that you will go through and identify the objective, experimental design, outcome, and then finally suggest alternatives. I will send a second e-mail with further details.

Hey Gina,
I plan to be in the experiment tomorrow at 8:30am, and you said today (in class) that anyone who wanted to take the other experiment at the same time as this one, should email you saying so...and that is what I'm doing here. If there's anything else I need to do, please email me and let me know.
Thanks
Quoting Gina, August 6th, 8:46pm:
I have to be on a conference call tomorrow morning so I will not be able to do the make up for the first experiment. I am going to arrange a make up for the first experiment on either tuesday (anytime) or wednesday morning. Let me know what time would work for you.
Quoting Scully, August 6th, late evening:
Well, the problem is, I go home (to Las Vegas) on Saturday morning, and have class from 9:15am-12:35pm, and work from 1-4:30pm, which is why I missed the earlier experiments in the first place. I think if you've got times available on Friday, before 9:15am, between 10am and 11am, or between 11:45am and 12:35pm, I could be there. (I have exams in two classes, and believe I will be free at these times) - If you have any other times available or these times are okay, please let me know, and we can get it set up.
Quoting Gina, August 7th, 7:19pm:
The only other opportunity would be for Tuesday at 11:30, that is the next make-up time for both experiments. I know how it is to have to balance both work and school, but we have offered as much as we can right now. I have another full-time job and will not be at the University on Friday....Tuesday is the next shot. If you want to do the paper option Rod can approve a study that you can critique and you can e-mail it to me.

Now, I feel I should mention a few things. I registered on the website to participate in the research, and it told me that I would receive my log-in information shortly. 36 hours later, I had it, of course, by that time, I'd already participated in the experiment. Yay for efficiency.
There were three sessions of the experiment available today. The alternative to doing the research is a lengthy research article critique, that is the epitome of grey area with the B-School. Students asked about it, and couldn't get a response from the teacher, and Gina wasn't any more helpful.
Now, I know it's one percentage point (which may make a difference to my grade in this case), and it's not that big of a deal. But I'm still thoroughly annoyed. I had resigned earlier in the class to write off those points, only to have the carrot of being able to achieve them held in front of my face. I lunged, and half of it was cut off before I could eat it. Slam in the face. Would it have been that difficult to give the experimenter lady the bloody products for me to judge before your conference call?
I tried to track her down in her office this morning after class, but she wasn't around, and probably hadn't read my email at that time anyway. I have a sour taste in my mouth re: the business school, and I still have another 20 something credits to take...at least I don't think I have to participate in Marketing Research for those classes.
And I've participated in Psych and Kinesiology experiments, and I've not had these problems. Maybe it's a summer session fluke, or maybe they're just incompetent, I don't know. I don't care. The situation was poorly handled, and I am disappointed.
